I don't really know where to begin. I guess let's start here, Jaelyn and I both go to the same school. We met last year through Samara Belhomme and decided to do a music collab in the basement of the Windsor residence. We then recorded Sirens which we released earlier this year. This semester, Jaelyn and I wanted to do something like that again but maybe a few more songs this time. The process of this e.p (which doesn't have a name) would be best described as calming, experimental, longggg recording sessions, and getting sick. It's been such a journey and the three songs are definitely ones that we are very happy with. What I personally enjoyed about this whole collab was how spontaneous it was. A lot of decisions were very last minute. Jaelyn learned "Tomorrow", 10min before it was recorded and it just may be the highlight song of the e.p.
Each time you get to work on something creative with someone, there's so much you learn from it. Here are some of the tips and tricks I picked up from this experience:
1) The #1 thing to focus on is the instrumental. In fact it might just be the best tactic to write the melody and words AROUND the instrumental.
2) Harmony is super important. Listen to any song and try to identify when harmony comes in. There's almost always harmony in the chorus because without it, the melody often cannot stand by itself.
3) The goal is to make the instrumental unnoticeable/indistinct to the listener.
4) It's okay to re-record 1,2,3,4..etc times. There's no rush, work on it till you're happy and if you're not, scratch it and start a new one. It's okay to screw up because you can always go back and redo the mistakes.
5) Your closet is an amazing place to record because the clothes protect the rough edges of sounds and eliminates echo.
I also owe a lot of thanks to my roommates who I'm sure were at times super annoyed with my prancing, dancing and singing as I wrote/recorded these songs in my room and the kitchen. Especially during the 3rd recording session which ended at 2:30am in my bedroom. I'm particularly sorry to Dancey who sleeps in the room right below me and probably heard everything (including my countless failed high-pitch harmony recordings). I promise there won't be any more commotion coming from my room for the rest of this semester. Thank you guys, you're the best!
Thank you to Bella for allowing me to use her computer to edit the music video since my computer kept crashing. Thank you to Struts Gallery as well for providing equipment to me. And finally a big thank you to all my friends, especially Grace and Spencer for being supportive and always being there for me.
And finally the biggest thank you to Jaelyn. You are so kind, smart, confident, funny, and such a beautiful singer. The process of creating music is exhausting and I could not have asked for a better friend to have worked through this with. You're the best music collab partner ever! Will miss you greatly next year when you're no longer at Mt.A. I hope we can work on a new project again in the near future :)
